Malaysian Tax Counsel · Since 1985

Forty years of Malaysian tax law, distilled into advice you can actually use.

Before the audit letter arrives. Before the penalty is imposed. Before a routine filing becomes a four-year dispute with LHDN — there is a conversation worth having.

The Mission

Tax shouldn't be the thing that ruins a good year.

Most Malaysians don't get into trouble with LHDN because they tried to cheat. They get into trouble because the law is dense, the forms are unforgiving, and no one explained the rules in plain language.

Lay Beng's practice exists to close that gap — for the salaried professional, the family business, the high net worth individual, and the listed-company director alike. Different stakes, same principle: understand the rules, file with confidence, sleep well at night.

Practice Background

Trained in both mid-size and international accounting firms before exploring in the tax consultancy practice. Forty years specialising in Malaysian taxation — across accounting, audit, and advisory.

How She Helps

Three things, done with care.

01 — Stay Compliant

Annual filings, withholding tax, transfer pricing, GST/SST positions — handled correctly the first time, with documentation that holds up under review.

02 — Reduce Exposure

Lawful structuring of income, investments, businesses, and succession — to pay what is owed and not a ringgit more.

03 — Resolve Disputes

Representation in LHDN audits, investigations, and appeals — calm, technical, and grounded in four decades of precedent.

The Forty-Year Story

From a junior auditor's desk to four Bursa boardrooms.

1985 — The Foundation

Joined a mid-size Malaysian accounting firm. Learned tax the long way: by reading the Act, line by line.

The International Years

Moved to an international firm. Worked across audit, tax, and advisory for clients ranging from owner-managed businesses to multinationals.

Independent Practice

Founded her own consulting practice — built on referrals, kept deliberately small, focused on work that requires judgment, not volume.

Professional Leadership

Elected Chairperson of the Southern Branch of the Chartered Tax Institute of Malaysia. Later, Regional Chairperson of the Malaysian Institute of Accountants for Johor.

The Boardroom

Today, an Independent Non-Executive Director of four Bursa Malaysia-listed companies — a role she takes for the same reason she started teaching tax: the rules only work when someone insists they be followed properly.

For Whom

Private counsel for four kinds of taxpayer.

i. Individual Taxpayers

For the salaried professional who has never been audited and would rather keep it that way. Personal reliefs, rental income, share gains, foreign income — explained in plain English, filed without anxiety.

ii. High Net Worth Individuals

Discreet, technically rigorous counsel for those whose tax position spans multiple entities, jurisdictions, and generations. Investment holding structures, cross-border income, estate and succession planning, and quiet handling of LHDN's lifestyle-versus-income reviews.

iii. SME Owners

For the founder who built the business and now finds the tax file has outgrown the bookkeeper. Director's remuneration, dividend strategy, group restructuring, and audit readiness — without the Big Four price tag.

iv. Listed-Company Directors

Tax governance from someone who sits on the other side of the boardroom table. Director liability, related-party transactions, and the kind of audit-committee questions you want answered before they're asked.
